Backpacks
Despite their potential problems, backpacks are great when used properly. Before you buy one, however, consider a backpack's construction.
Look for the following features to choose the right backpack:
- Lightweight backpack
- Get one that doesn't add a lot of weight to your child's load; for example, leather packs look cool, but they weigh more than canvas backpacks
- Wide, Padded shoulder straps
- Make sure that the straps are not too narrow; narrow straps tend to dig into the shoulders
- Padded back
- This not only provides increased comfort but also protects kids from being poked by sharp objects or edges inside the backpack
- Waist belt
- This helps to distribute the weight more evenly across the body
- Multiple compartments
- To help distribute the weight throughout the backpack
Although backpacks on wheels may be good options for students who have to lug around really heavy loads, they are hard to pull up stairs and roll on uneven surfaces. Check with the school before buying a rolling backpack, many do not allow them because it can be a tripping hazard in the hallways.

Sunscreen At School
Students in Alabama's public and private schools are now allowed to use FDA-approved sunscreen at school.
According to the CDC, the application of sunscreen while outdoors is a simple step to protect yourself from the harm of overexposure to sunlight's UVA and UVB rays. A sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher should be applied at least every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Follow the directions on the sunscreen bottle label.
